Art That Celebrates Being Seen

I'm Rashida Joseph, a self-taught artist and surface pattern designer and the founder of Lifewithrjarts.

I create art about women, connection, culture, and the beauty of being fully seen.

My work is rooted in a simple belief: the art we choose to live with should do more than fill an empty wall. It should make us feel something. It should remind us of who we are, where we've come from, the people we love, and the stories we carry with us.

Why I Create

I was born in Antigua, a Caribbean island where color, community, family, celebration, and storytelling are woven into everyday life.

Those experiences continue to influence the way I see the world and the way I paint.

You'll find bold color throughout my work, but color is only part of the story.

I'm interested in the relationships between women. Sisterhood. Motherhood. Friendship. Strength. Softness. Joy. Memory. Belonging.

My signature Long Neck Ladies grew from that exploration.

I've watched women stand in front of these paintings and say:

"They remind me of my three daughters."

"That's me and my sisters."

Those moments have helped me understand something important about my own work.

I'm not simply painting women.

I'm creating opportunities for us to recognize ourselves and the people we love.

Created to Be Seen

For many of us, seeing ourselves reflected beautifully in the spaces we inhabit carries meaning.

That's why I create.

I want my paintings to bring presence into a room—to become the piece you notice when you walk through the door, the artwork someone asks about when they visit, or the painting that quietly reminds you of someone you love.

I create for collectors who are drawn to color but stay for the story.

For women who recognize something familiar in the figures.

For homes where culture, family, individuality, and memory deserve a visible place.

And for anyone who believes that art should feel personal.

From Antigua to the Bronx

My path to becoming an artist wasn't traditional.

My professional journey began in social work and education, while creativity remained a constant part of my life. In 2021, I decided to take that creative calling seriously.

I taught myself Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and began exploring surface pattern design alongside my painting practice.

What began as curiosity eventually became Lifewithrjarts.

Today, I create from my home studio in the Bronx, carrying influences from Antigua, New York, nature, travel, everyday encounters, and the women and communities around me into the work.

Some paintings remain singular original works. Others evolve into patterns or carefully selected functional pieces, allowing the artwork to live beyond the canvas.

But everything begins with the art.

Art for the Life You're Creating

I believe collecting art is deeply personal.

You don't have to know everything about art to become a collector.

Sometimes you simply see a painting and feel something.

It reminds you of home.

It reminds you of your mother.

Your sisters.

Your daughters.

A place you've traveled.

A version of yourself you're becoming.

Or maybe you can't explain the connection at all—you simply know you want to live with it.

That's enough.

My hope is that when one of my paintings enters your home, it doesn't simply decorate your space.

It becomes part of your story.
